Nine years ago I decided to surprise my boyfriend by showing up on his doorstep in lingerie. I felt RED1312020153_originalexcited about the idea until I looked in the mirror. How can he possibly love or want me if I’m fat, bloated and too soft. I felt such shame and disgust towards myself. What if he touches my waist and his hand sinks into my fat? I worried that he’d feel and see that my stomach wasn’t flat. That night, like most other times, I shoved my emotions under the rug and proceeded to do what I thought I should be doing. I did what I was supposed to do but I didn’t feel confident. I wasn’t able to really enjoy what I was doing. I found myself going through the motions of life while keeping my attention closely centered on my chubby midsection and internal disgust.

At that time I didn’t realize it, but my relationship with my body was filled with hate that led to low body confidence, distrust that led to constant restriction and abuse at the gym, and complete disconnection that led to over thinking about diets and constant anxiety over food.

This constant internal battle lasted all throughout my time in graduate school. My refusal to listen to my body or just giving it voice led to problems beyond weight and low confidence. My weak digestion became horrible. I felt constantly bloated and constipated. I couldn’t go to the bathroom for 2-3 days and had to drink disgusting fiber drinks and travel with a bag of laxative pills.

Then Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome made an appearance along with all its fun mood swings and hormonal issues. Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, pieces of my scalp started to come off due to severe psoriasis. I couldn’t believe the health problems I was experiencing. I come from a very healthy family and my parents practice both traditional and eastern medicine. I was shocked to end up on hormone pills and cortisone cream being barely 23.

I chose to go an alternative route to treat my body and it kind of worked but inside I still felt very disconnected from my body. Yoga, meditation, healthy food, juices and herbs brought me much closer to being healthy, but they didn’t fix the body hate or the confidence issue.

I was waking up tired and would drink a quart of strong tea to go to the bathroom. I tried to restrict my carbs to lose weight and puffiness and ended up binging on fruit, nuts and chocolate midday, feeling drained, bloated, and extremely depleted. I kept asking myself: why don’t I have enough willpower?

I kept relying on what I thought I “should” be doing and expert advice when it came to supplements, food, and exercise. I always searched for an answer outside even though I could never stick with it.

I would restrict myself from eating sugar, dairy or gluten and then go out with my friends for dinner and wine.

I tried a raw detox retreat but then I’d overeat on fruits to the point of overwhelming my liver and digestion.

I tortured my brain searching for solutions and my body by following various approaches. And only got further and further from looking and feeling the way I wanted to.
